Been There, Do This: Muslim Quarter in Xian, China

A visit to the Terra-Cotta Warriors is a must when in Xian, China, but when friends ask me for tips on what else to experience in the area, I’m quick to suggest the Muslim Quarter night market adjacent to the Drum Tower.

Beneath the twinkling lights and canopies, local vendors and cooks sell their wares and snacks; trash-cans-turned-stoves house 3-foot-tall flames and giant woks full of meats and vegetables; and elderly farmers sell freshly picked cherries out of rickety wooden carts. With any luck, you’ll go just after a rain storm and feel the market’s energy build as locals come out to enjoy the night air and pick up ingredients for the next day’s meals.
