Been There, Do this: Popeye and Sweets in Chester, Illinois

Join Popeye the Sailor Man, Olive Oyl and the rest of the seafaring gang in their tiny hometown of Chester, Ill. This rural Midwestern town was also the hometown of the “Popeye” comic strip’s creator, Elzie Crisler Segar — a fun fact frequently feted by locals.

Purchase a Popeye shirt and other memorabilia at Spinach Can Collectibles, and then walk through the store to its attached Popeye Museum — America’s only institution solely dedicated to celebrating the characters of “Popeye.” Visitors can also stroll along the nearby Popeye & Friends Character Trail, which hosts a variety of life-size Popeye statues.

But if spinach isn’t your thing, head over to Pinky’s Sugarland, a bakery located in a bright pink house on State Street, for some delicious cakes, cupcakes and cake pops.
