You can now find many deluxe hotels in the major urban areas of Java and Bali. Accommodations on the smaller, lesser-known islands range from good to extremely primitive. The midrange guesthouses in the popular tourist areas are generally clean and well-managed and should be sufficient for most travelers.

A nice alternative to higher-end hotels on Bali is to rent a villa—often a private vacation home that is rented out when the owners are not around or, increasingly, a luxury unit dedicated to pampering guests. Villas offer privacy, beautiful gardens and on-site staff; given the huge hotel tax and expensive room service, they can actually save you money.
