The Mexican state of Guerrero recently announced a record-breaking influx of tourism. Acapulco, Taxco and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, known as the Sun Triangle destinations, received the most travelers out of any time this past decade. According to the Guerrero Tourism Board (GTB), there was a 15 percent increase in the Sun Triangle’s tourism, amounting to a 23 percent economic boom for the area.
In response to its success, Acapulco is investing about $14 million to renovate the city’s most iconic sites. The largest demographic of visitors is still domestic, but Canadian and U.S. travelers are proving to be a vital market. Acapulco’s new air terminal and GTB’s partnership with TripAdvisor are moves to promote Guerrero to the Canada and U.S. markets.
