Dating back to 1961, the 30-room Kamuela Inn is going through a complete makeover under the creative guidance of its new owners. Located in the town of Waimea, the low-key upcountry landmark has already renovated its breakfast room, which now features design touches inspired by the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) lifestyle of the hotel’s surroundings. Next on the schedule are a soft-goods overhaul, painting and building repairs, new guestroom bedding and furniture and public space upgrades. The owners envision Kamuela Inn as a perfect place for farm-to-table dinners and cooking classes that showcase locally grown products. It’s also well-suited for active travelers and small retreats looking for affordable digs. Watch for a 2016 grand reopening of the boutique destination hotel.
