The World Tourism Organization

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recently launched its “Travel.Enjoy.Respect” campaign, a consumer initiative that raises awareness for sustainable tourism. The campaign’s message — which will be communicated in several languages and through various outlets — also includes a manual with tips and recommendations on how to travel responsibly.

Why It Matters:
Travel is an enriching experience that allows us to explore new settings, cultures and ideas. But to ensure that we continue enjoying the lands we visit for years to come, it’s important to minimize our impact on both the country’s environment and its local communities. When booking a trip abroad, be sure to educate clients about what it means to respect a host country’s culture and protect its natural environment.

Fast Facts:
- Outlets that will promote the campaign include CNN International, the Government of Andorra, the Madrid City Council, Iberia, the Spanish National Railways System, Minube, PR Mediaco, Cleverdis and Air Mauritius.

- 2017 is known as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism.

- The World Committee on Tourism Ethics, in line with the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, provides a traveler manual that includes various recommendations to help consumers make responsible choices when traveling and ensuring a positive impact on the countries they visit.

What They Are Saying:
“Whenever you travel, wherever you travel, remember to respect nature, respect culture and respect your host,” said Taleb Rifai, secretary general for UNWTO. “You can be the change you want to see in the world. You can be an ambassador for a better future. Travel, enjoy and respect.”

“Today more than ever, ensuring that tourism is an enriching experience for visitors and hosts alike demands strong, sustainable tourism policies and practices and the engagement of national, as well as local, governments and administrations, private sector companies, local communities and tourists themselves,” added Rifai.
