Spring is cool and calm around the Grand Canyon — a time when athletic adventurers can take advantage of the lull in tourism to appreciate the serene sublimity of the land while still satisfying their taste for vigorous outdoor activity. Arizona River Runners, a Grand Canyon rafting company, is offering four “Hiker’s Special” rafting trips this April and May for such travelers.
As the name suggests, these trips incorporate rigorous foot treks into their rafting adventures, offering side-canyon explorations and views of lesser-seen parts of the canyon to eager hikers. Along the way hikers will be able to witness hidden waterfalls, ancient Native American ruins and vast overlooks. Six-, seven- and 12-day trips are available in April, and a 10-day hiking-focused trip will be offered in May. These are physically demanding expeditions requiring travelers to be in great shape, but Arizona River Runners invites those who are up to the challenge. Prices start at $1,295 per person.
