Update: Please note that the below event has been postponed to Sept. 25, 2011, due to the county-wide power outage experienced by San Diego County last week.

Dog lovers, beach-goers and surfers are not the only crowds likely to be drawn to Dog Beach in Del Mar on September 11th. The Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, presented by Eukanuba, is a great event for anyone who likes to have fun while supporting a good cause. The Surf-A-Thon features today's great doggie surfers, who begin competing at 8:30 a.m. After the first round of surfing, the winners in each category reconvene to vie for the “Best in Surf” title at 1 p.m. These Helen Woodward Dogs are judged by some of the top surfers in the nation.

The money raised by the Beach Bum and Bikini Babe Costume Contest and Doo the Dah from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. go to support the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Doo the Dah features owners and their pets, dressed up in costume, performing surfing stunts for the judges. The event concludes with an award ceremony which will honor the first inductee into the Surf Dog Hall of Fame and over 70 vendor booths offer visitors a wide array of pet products and surf gear, including “Surfah Dog” surf boards.
