The Tall Ships Challenge, a series of races at sea, is coming to the California coast this summer with ships from around the world. From late June through early September, barkentines, brigs, brigantines, schooners, sloops, full-rigged ships and more will sail the Pacific coast and dock at ports along the way. Festivals and entertainment will accompany the maritime brigade.
Each waterfront will be transformed in a festive and lively environment with an abundance of family activities, cultural and musical entertainment and educational programs and events. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour vessels, participate in boat-building competitions, explore maritime-related exhibits and enjoy food, crafts, displays and nautical-themed activities.
After visiting British Columbia and Washington, ships will make their way to San Francisco, where they will dock from July 23-28. Next, their journey includes the Channel Islands from Aug. 7-10, Los Angeles from Aug. 13-17 and San Diego from Aug. 20-24. The challenge culminates in Dana Point, Calif. from Sept. 6-7 with a grand festival.
