Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park, located in Montrose, Colo., is a great destination for a winter excursion. The park offers a bevy of outdoor activities accessible to the entire family.

Enjoy a six mile, unplowed trail, overlooking the scenic canyon, where you can cross-country ski on the South Rim. Or, visit the Oak Flat Loop and Rim Rock Trail, which offer an enviable snowshoe-trekking adventure.

Although snowshoeing is permitted throughout the rim, snowshoeing into the canyon is not recommended. Advise clients to note the local courtesy and only snowshoe or walk in untracked snow on the South Rim; also, dogs are not allowed there.

If you seek an alternative to the unguided, figure-it-out-as-you-go experience, Black Canyon offers complimentary guided snowshoeing tours for visitors. These tours are led by park rangers. Snowshoes, including kid’s sizes, are provided complementarily.

Clients may also be interested in the upcoming two-hour cross-country ski clinic and the ranger-led, moonlight cross-country skiing that are sure to fill up quickly.
