Clients can try EpicMix when Keystone opens in November // © 2010 Vail Resorts
This winter, Vail Resorts will bring social media to the mountains with a new online and mobile application — EpicMix — that allows skiers and snowboarders at their five ski resorts (Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Heavenly) to digitally capture their on-mountain experiences.
The application is a cross between Nike+ (a system that tracks your physical activity) and FourSquare (recognition of location-based accomplishments), with the ability to connect and share with friends on Facebook and Twitter.
EpicMix allows skiers to track vertical feet and runs skied and also recognizes special achievements by rewarding guests with collectible digital pins. The mobile app will also alert guests when their Facebook friends are on the mountain and can be used to send private messages to meet up. There is also an EpicMix site for children that features special content and privacy restrictions.
EpicMix also uses RFID technology on season passes and lift tickets to allow for passive "check-ins" on the mountain so that guests can participate without having to carry a phone or a GPS device.
Skiers can try the application out for the first time when Keystone resort opens Nov. 5.
