Pacific Beach Hotel is hosting a series of celebrations called Natsu Matsuri (Summer Festival) every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening from July 29-Aug. 28, 2011. The highlight of each evening is a traditional Japanese bon dance, where participants -- some in colorful costumes -- step and clap together to live music under festive lanterns.
Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with yatai (food booths) and yomise (games and toys) available to locals and visitors alike. Guests can taste such dishes as okonomiyaki (Japanese savory pancakes), yakisoba (fried noodles), udon noodles and traditional desserts. At 6:30 p.m., after a taiko drum performance, guests are invited to join the bon dance circle.
This year, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to assist in Japan's recovery effort from the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.
Pacific Beach Hotel is located directly across from Waikiki Beach.
