American Airlines will begin charging passengers for a second checked bag on select international flights for tickets purchased on or after Sept. 14. The $50 charge will apply to flights to India and the following European countries of Belgium, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.

Passengers who are exempt from the new baggage fee are those with Elite-level or premium-class status, those who are active military personnel and customers who purchase full-fare economy tickets. All trans-Atlantic passengers can continue to check their first bag for free.
