Experience a living piece of the Wild West at the historical ghost towns of Virginia City and Nevada City, in full swing in Montana from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Virginia City, an 1860’s boomtown fueled by a massive gold strike, offers a piece of the past frozen in time. Take the Overland Stagecoach for a tour around the city to check out its creaking boardwalks, rickety wooden buildings and antique furnishings. Take a walk over to Boot Hill Cemetery, the final resting place of those who were bested by vigilante justice. Visitors can even see a 19th-century melodrama from the Virginia City Players.

Next, hop on the Alder Gulch Short Line for the short trip over to Nevada City, home to more than 100 historic buildings. Visit the town on a summer Living History Weekend to see a re-enactment of Wild West history, including hangings, trials, flour riots and daily life activities such as blacksmithing and quilting. Then check out the Nevada City Music Hall, touted as the largest automated music museum in the world, to visit its collection of player pianos, organs and mechanical orchestras.
