The 29th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering will take place in Elko, Nevada, from Jan. 28-Feb. 2, 2013, celebrating the people, culture and traditions of the American West. Tickets for the event became available on Sept. 4 to members of the Western Folklife Center — the nonprofit organization that produces the Gathering — and will be available to the general public on Oct. 4.
The Gathering features performances of poetry and music from the cowboy and ranching occupation, as well as exhibitions, films, workshops, dances and discussions. This year’s event will host butteri, cowboys from Italy, who maintain their own unique traditions but still have much in common with their American counterparts. The Italian cultural exchange is part of the Western Folklife Center’s ongoing efforts to foster understanding among worldwide herding cultures.
More than 50 poets and musicians will attend the Gathering, including Baxter Black, Wally McRae, Yvonne Hollenbeck, Don Edwards, Tom Russell, the Quebe Sisters Band, Cowboy Celtic and many others.
