The City of Las Cruces Museum System in Las Cruces, N.M. has been accepted into the Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program. As an affiliate, Las Cruces city museums will now be able to borrow objects from the Smithsonian’s extensive collections. They will also be able to access the expertise of the staff and consult on any museum issue.
The city museums are the third Smithsonian Affiliate in the state. In recognition of this achievement, the Las Cruces City Council has designated July as Smithsonian Affiliations Month.
"Today, the Smithsonian is doing more than sharing its treasures with the museums of America," said Harold A. Closter, director of Smithsonian Affiliations. "We are building relationships with people in their own communities, coast to coast, ensuring that all Americans can enjoy a quality Smithsonian experience, regardless of their proximity to Washington, D.C."
In selecting new affiliates, the Smithsonian considers proposals from institutions with missions parallel to the Smithsonian's mission and that demonstrate a strong commitment to serving their communities.
