The seaside town of Astoria is getting ready for the 117th Astoria Regatta, slated for Aug. 10-14, 2011. Taking place in the oldest U.S. settlement west of the Rocky Mountains, this year's event is titled Happy 200th Birthday Astoria.
Astoria was founded by John Jacob Astor of Walldorf, Germany, a fur trader who settled the town back in 1811. Astor's descendant -- Lord John Jacob Astor VIII -- and his son Charles will visit Astoria during regatta week and will be honored as one of this year’s Regatta Admirals.
Also visiting Astoria during regatta week is the burgermeister (mayor) of Walldorf, Germany, Mrs. Staab, as well as several members of the Walldorf City Council. Burgermeister Staab will also be one of this year’s Regatta Admirals.
Highlighting this year's regatta is a concert performance by Grammy Award-winning country music star Reba McEntire on Aug. 14. Opening for McEntire will be Phil Vasser and the Oregon Army Band.
Other events during the regatta include the Kiwanis Junior parade on Aug. 10; coronation of the regatta queen and her court on Aug. 11; a softball tournament on Aug. 12-14; family activities, a twilight boat parade, music, entertainment and fireworks on Aug. 13; and a pancake breakfast and yacht club races on Aug. 14.
