That buzz you hear is not just the construction noise that comes with putting the finishing touches on Portland's newest lodging property.
It's also the hum of anticipation from music fans, microbrew lovers and value seekers eagerly awaiting the May 3, 2011 opening of McMenamins Crystal Hotel.
Brothers Mike and Brian McMenamin have a history of reinventing spaces (a former elementary school and an abandoned poor farm have become popular dining and lodging establishments), and this is their first foray into downtown lodging.
A former nightclub in the vibrant West End, the Crystal Hotel is located steps from Powell's Books, the Pearl District and the heart of downtown. It promises to offer equal parts whimsy and creature comfort.
Overnight guests of the 51-room hotel will enjoy a subterranean saltwater soaking pool, a cellar bar with live music and dibs on tickets to McMenamin's nearbyCrystal Ballroom -- even for sold-out shows. The craft-brewing pioneers' own spirits, wine and beer will be on tap on site and at Ringlers Annex Pub next door.
