Over the years, Portland’s active film industry has brought major motion pictures, commercials and television shows to the area. Often, however, Portland stands in for another destination completely (the TBS drama “Leverage” is filmed there, but the show is set in Boston).

In early 2011, “Portlandia” put the city on the national television map, leading visitors to seek out filming locations. On Oct. 28, national audiences will see a different side of Portland altogether with the series premiere of "Grimm," running Fridays at 9 p.m.

Premiering just in time for Halloween, “Grimm” -- NBC’s newest and perhaps darkest detective drama -- draws on Portland as a lead character. The city’s bridges, green spaces and downtown streets round out a cast of fantastical characters in this show that finds inspiration in the Grimm Brothers’ fairytales.

Past successes for series co-creator David Greenwalt include “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel.”
