Sip and Vote at the Heathman's Dueling Sommelier Dinner Series

A new cast of sommeliers and guest chefs star in the dinner event where diners determine who is this season's top sommelier

Returning for its third season, the 2009 Dueling Sommelier Dinner Series features a new cast of sommeliers and guest chefs in the dinner event where diners determine who is the top sommelier this season.

Jeff Groh, creator of the series and sommelier at the Heathman Restaurant and Bar welcome colleagues from some of Portland’s most venerable restaurants: Jack Hott from Castagna, Jeff Moore from Wildwood and Andy Zalman from Higgins. The 2009 Dueling Sommelier series kicks off on May 30, 2009 with a four-course menu prepared by the Heathman’s Culinary Director Philippe Boulot and continues on June 20th with guest chef Dustin Clark from Wildwood. Additional dinners featuring menus from Higgins and Castagna are scheduled for July and August, before culminating with the Grand Finale dinner in September.

“Every year this event has gotten better and better,” said Jeff Groh.

“Bringing in Andy, Jack and Jeff for the third year is really going to raise the ante. I think we are about to introduce Portland to some amazing food and wine.”

The five dinners in the series are prepared by the Heathman’s culinary director, Philippe Boulot, as well as guest chefs from Castagna, Higgins and Wildwood. Each chef creates a four-course dinner and the four sommeliers pair a wine with every course. Guests attending the event evaluate the wine and food pairing and rank the wines on how well they complement the food. Wines are revealed throughout the evening and the sommeliers answer questions about the pairings. Scores are collected throughout the dinner series and the top two high scoring sommeliers at the end of the series meet in the Grand Finale dinner to battle for the crown.

Dinners are $110 per person, not including gratuity.
