Nearly 1,000 visitors — many among them genealogists and family historians — are expected to arrive in Casper, Wyo. for this year’s International Convention of Germans from Russia, to be held July 28-Aug.3.
The majority of convention attendees are members from the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia and the Germans from Russia Heritage Society . The convention will take place at the Parkway Plaza Hotel and Convention Center and Wyoming governor Dave Freudenthal will speak at the opening ceremony, to be held July 31.
This year’s theme is titled “Celebrating Our Common Heritage.” The conference features more than 40 workshops covering topics from the Volga famine of 1921-22 to genetic genealogy. Cultural cooking classes give attendees a chance to learn ancestral recipes, too. The convention also boasts a number of highly regarded speakers and experts in Russian and German history as well as sing-along sessions.
