The year may be winding down, but adventure travel tour operators aren’t slowing their roll. Here are some of our favorite new offerings, available for booking for the remainder of 2017 or in 2018.
Bike through Portugal’s wine region
Cyclists will spin through Portugal’s Alentejo region during Trek Travel’s new six-day itinerary, which begins and ends in Vila Vicosa. Throughout the tour, clients will ride through wheat fields, vineyards and cork tree groves. Daily rides range from 30 to 50 miles, with shorter or more extreme routes available. Other tour highlights include a ride in a hot air balloon and a visit to the medieval cities of Evora and Elvas, both of which are designated UNESCO World Heritage sites.
There are multiple departures available for the remainder of 2017 and throughout 2018, and private tours are available. The rate begins at $3,399 per person.
Glamp in Style While on Safari
Clients looking for a luxurious-yet-active safari experience will enjoy Austin Adventures’ newest offering. Beginning in summer 2018, the tour operator will offer an 11-day Tanzania Bush Rover Explorer itinerary that features Tanzania’s Great Migration (the exodus of about 1.5 million wildebeest and thousands of zebra and antelope to Kenya’s Masai Mara).
During the tour, clients will glamp in a private, foldable “Bush Rover Suite” that can be assembled above each Land Rover safari vehicle. The suite will include a bedroom, solar-powered hot water, a wood-paneled bathroom, electrical outlets and a balcony from which they can view the migration.
The itinerary will be available from June 8-18 and Aug. 16-26, 2018. The rate begins at $4,498 per person, based on double occupancy.
Hike Through Patagonia
Intrepid Group’s Peregrine Adventures is offering guests the opportunity to visit the glaciers and icescapes of Chile and Argentina during its 11-day hiking tour of Patagonia. The tour, which begins at $6,045, includes the Torres Base Trek, a stop at Perito Merino Glacier and exploration of Los Glaciares National Park and its hiking trails. During the scenic route, the small group will also pass granite pillars, blue-hued lakes and waterfalls.
The itinerary should be booked for clients who maintain at least a moderate level of fitness. Multiple departures will take place during the remainder of 2017 and throughout 2018.
Journeys International Unveils 2018 Tours
Journeys International, a family-owned adventure travel company, recently introduced new trips for 2018 in celebration of the business’ 40th anniversary.
Active clients can visit a wide range of destinations in Africa, South America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. During the Volcanoes and Villages of Southern Italy tour, travelers will traverse several volcanoes while learning about the geology of each one, in addition to visiting Pompeii, Mount Etna and the Italian cities of Rome, Naples and Matera.
Or, female clients can opt for a women’s-only adventure in Myanmar, which focuses on in-depth cultural interaction.
Summit Mount Kilimanjaro With Wilderness Travel
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a staple bucket-list item for many adventurous travelers. Now, they can check off a summit of Africa’s highest mountain with the help of Wilderness Travel. The 11-day trip, which begins at $4,995, includes eight nights of accommodation at mountain camps and two nights of private acclimatization.
During the trips, clients will traverse uncrowded trails — climbing to 19,340 feet over difficult terrain — before experiencing a sunrise at the mountain’s summit of Uhuru Peak. The first two days of the trip will also include a game drive in Tanzania’s Arusha National Park.
