The new South Africa Hops and Hippos tour from Africa Adventure Consultants combines pub crawls, home brewer hands-on workshops and wildlife adventures. The 13-day exploration focuses on the origins of Cape Town breweries. Activities include visiting a woman who brews by the ancient method to touring a range of commercial breweries within the cities. For the average package, the tour includes Newlands Brewery in Cape Town, Birkenhead and Napier Breweries in Hermanus and the Firkin and Zululand Breweries in Durban. The tour also includes a three-day safari to get up-close-and-personal with the animals in the Thanda Private Game Reserve.

Deluxe accommodations feature lodging in a converted 1904 Cape Town waterfront warehouse, a Durban B&B, a camp on a private reserve or a hotel in the Melrose Arch neighborhood in Johannesburg. There is also an option to include a home brewing class at the Beer Lab for $121 or a whale watching excursion, which is dependent on the season. Prices start at $4,506 through Sept. 30 and increase to $4,871 per person from Oct. 1 – Dec. 31 for land travel.
