Singapore Airlines has announced plans to reinstate nonstop service between Singapore and the U.S. — to Los Angeles and New York City — as early as 2018.

The carrier ended nonstop flights to the U.S. in 2013 after retiring its fleet of Airbus A340-500 aircraft.

However, the airline has since placed an order with European manufacturer Airbus for seven A350-900ULR aircraft, which will have a range of up to 10,000 miles.

“Our customers have been asking us to restart nonstop Singapore-U.S. flights,” said Goh Choon Phong, CEO of Singapore Airlines. “And we are pleased that Airbus was able to offer the right aircraft to do so in a commercially viable manner.”

According to James Boyd , vice president of public relations for the Americas for Singapore Airlines, the carrier is also considering additional U.S. gateways for nonstop service from Singapore.

“While it’s too early to announce specifics, we generally look for cities with strong corporate markets, a viable premium leisure segment and extensive catchment areas with good feed as potential destinations,” he said.

The Singapore-New York segment would reclaim the title of the world’s longest nonstop flight. However, Boyd says it’s still too early to offer any firm specifics about the onboard seat configuration or amenities, largely because the planes are still under construction in Europe.

“We are planning a brand-new roster of products, specifically designed to deliver Singapore Airlines’ industry-leading comfort and service standards in seating, dining, amenities and entertainment,” he said.

Boyd also notes that Singapore Airlines considers U.S. travel agents “an important part of our success.”

“We are excited to reintroduce this new travel option for their clients,” he said. “The planned nonstop flights will provide the fastest, most efficient means of travel between the U.S. and Singapore.”

Boyd says that the airline’s hub at Changi Airport in Singapore also provides great connections to a range of business and leisure gateways across Southern Asia.
