Visiting a country during a cultural, sporting or other significant event is a great way for travelers to connect with locals. Travel agents should keep this in mind when booking clients to countries such as Korea, where the annual Mud Festival is a fun way for clients to experience the country in July.

Goway Travel’s product manager Bronwyn Hodge recommends visiting Korea in mid-July during which time clients can participate in the annual Boryeong Mud Festival, located in Boryeong, two hours from Korea’s capital, Seoul.

“This fun and adventurous ‘Mudfest’ features mud wrestling, mud sliding, swimming in the mud mega tub and relaxing in the mud-massage zone. Those feeling particularly energetic can try the marine mud-training course. So be prepared to get dirty,” said Hodge. “The dirtier you get, the better it is for you: The mud is considered rich in minerals, known for its beneficial effects on the skin, and it is used in many locally made cosmetic products.”

The festival was originally conceived as a way to promote a range of beauty cosmetics that contained minerals from the Boryeong mud flats. The first Mud Festival was staged in 1998, and it became so popular that it now attracts more than 2 million people worldwide. For those needing a break from the mud experiences, there is also live entertainment, fireworks and other exciting surprises. Visitors can also enjoy swimming (and de-mudding) at the beautiful white-sand beach of Daecheon or opt for a relaxing massage in town.

Goway offers a three-day Seoul Shopping travel itinerary from $379 that includes two nights hotel accommodation, breakfast daily and a half-day city sightseeing tour.
