The 541-room Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is scheduled to close later this month to begin a $140 million comprehensive renovation designed to reposition the flagship property with extensive upgrades and services while maintaining its classic, Chinese-influenced elegance.

A major component of the work which will reduce the room count to 503 will be the enclosure of the hotel’s balconies, which will increase the size of the guestrooms to over 430 square feet and provide scope for more spacious bathrooms.

“Throughout its 40-year history, Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong has been an icon of this vibrant city and one of the group’s best performing hotels. This refurbishment is designed to ensure its position as one of the world’s legendary hotels,” said Edouard Ettedgui, group chief executive of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.

The hotel’s exterior, public areas, restaurants and bars will be refurbished, and a reconfiguration of the ground floor will increase space for luxury retail. The hotel’s 69 suites will include 55 corner suites, eight executive suites and five signature suites. A presidential suite will feature a double-height living room with views of Victoria Harbor and the surrounding cityscape.

A restaurant is being designed for the 25th floor, in place of Vong, introducing the cuisine of three-star Michelin chef Pierre Gagnaire, and a new bar will remain on the floor.

Honoring the hotel’s Chinese heritage and original design, a new 22,600-square-foot Mandarin Spa and Wellness Centre will offer holistic rejuvenation and relaxation over three floors and will incorporate the existing swimming pool and fitness center, plus a new salon.

The hotel which will close Dec. 28 is set to reopen in late August.
