In a strategic move to promote its tourism product, St. Kitts has launched a new, interactive fan page on the popular social networking Web site, Facebook. As of February of this year, Facebook reported to have more than 175 million active users in the U.S. Also notable is that the fastest growing demographic for new Facebook users are individuals aged 30 and over.
The new Facebook page, My St. Kitts, features a discussion board, list of upcoming events, link to the island’s official tourism Web site (www.stkittstourism.kn), various island images and the logo of St. Kitts.
The page encourages Facebook users to become “fans” of the Caribbean island by adding My St. Kitts to their fan pages. Doing so enables users to access the features and information on St. Kitts’ new Facebook page. Users can share photos, videos, reviews, stories about their trips and travel tips with others.
“Considering that Facebook has such a large number of users internationally, we felt that it was timely and important for us to become participants in this form of social media,” said Ricky Skerritt, minister of the state in the ministry of tourism, sports and culture for St. Kitts. “As a marketing platform for our tourism product, the My St. Kitts page offers a direct connection to past and potential island visitors, allowing them to interact with and discuss the brand and thereby acting as a means of building the destination’s brand identity.”
