Carnival Cruise Lines has unveiled Fun Ship 2.0, a multi-year program whose first phase, ending in 2015, builds on features of Carnival Magic. The first phase includes versions of Magic’s waterpark across the fleet as well as new partnerships in dining and entertainment.

“Fun Ship 2.0 is the largest and most ambitious initiative that our company has ever undertaken, and it will serve to significantly transform the Carnival vacation experience for our guests,” said Gerry Cahill, president and CEO. “Through breakthrough partnerships with some of today’s biggest talents and most popular entertainment brands, plus our very own new branded experiences and onboard destinations, Carnival fans and those new to our cruises are destined for an incredible vacation experience.”

Carnival Liberty is the first ship to receive the new venues, with 16 vessels getting many of the Fun Ship 2.0 enhancements in the next four years. Liberty launched new features in October including Guy’s Burger Joint, serving free burgers and fries created by Food Network star Guy Fieri, with extraordinary attention paid to ingredients and preparation.

Liberty also has the RedFrog Rum Bar, a poolside version of the line’s RedFrog Pub that was introduced on the Magic in May, as well as the EA Sports Bar and the Blue Iguana Tequila Bar, plus the Alchemy Bar, where guests can create their own concoctions.

On the other side of the pool from RedFrog is the BlueIguana Tequila Bar, with Mexican-themed atmosphere, tequila-based frozen drinks and Mexican beers plus live music, and the complimentary Blue Iguana Cantina, where passengers can enjoy the freshly prepared wheat and jalapeno tortillas.

Partnering Up
DJs, trained by Miami icon DJ Irie, are front and center, from the Lido’s nightlife to the dance club and even the atrium music at embarkation. The noted DJ will create and lead his “Spin’iversity” to train and develop the musical skills and personalities of onboard DJ talent and boost the overall music experience for guests of all ages. Other Fun Ship 2.0 partnerships that will appear on Carnival ships next year include an enhanced Punchline Comedy Club under the direction of 32-year veteran comedian and television personality George Lopez, who will bring rising young talent onboard, while Hasbro is licensing Carnival’s Hasbro, The Game Show, a new series of larger-than-life productions and entertainment activities based on the “Family Game Night” show. Hasbro places guests right in the games, including Sorry Sliders, which involves a giant shuffleboard court; Yahtzee Bowling, with a giant ball and a huge bowling pin, and Connect 4 Basketball.

Carnival’s partnership with EA Sports has resulted in a sports bar where guests can play their favorite EA video games, watch live sports on a video wall, made up of 16 different 46-inch displays, and keep up with real-time sports scores 24/7.

In contrast, the quiet Library Bar is a new intimate cocktail lounge featuring bar service and automatic wine dispensers, for guests seeking a more serene experience.

Playlist Productions is dramatically retooling Carnival’s revues, combining live performances with high-tech LED staging and special effects. The 30-minute shows are created by leading producers, directors and choreographers who have worked on productions for Broadway, London’s West End and some of the world’s most popular musical acts. The new shows include “Motor City,” celebrating the R&B Motown sound of the 1960s and ’70s; “Divas,” which showcases the look and work of iconic female entertainers; “Latin Nights,” featuring rhythmic music and Latin fusion style and “The Brits!” focused on the U.K.’s most famous artists. After Carnival Breeze debuts, the new productions will spread to other ships.

The Next Phase
When can your clients take advantage of these cutting-edge 2.0 features? The enhanced Liberty is now in service, offering seven-day itineraries out of Miami that alternate Eastern and Western Caribbean routes, year-round.

Carnival’s new features will appear on the new Breeze, which is scheduled to debut in June 2012, while the Carnival Dream will receive enhancements when it goes into drydock next September.

Carnival Conquest, Carnival Glory and Carnival Splendor will also get 2.0 features next year, followed by Carnival Destiny, Carnival Legend, Carnival Pride and Carnival Victory in 2013.

Carnival Elation, Carnival Triumph, Carnival Freedom and Carnival Valor are slated for 2.0 enhancements in 2014, followed by Carnival Paradise and Carnival Magic in 2015.
