With five new-builds on order, Costa Crociere president Gianni Onorato told TAW that the new Costa Luminosa, which will debut next June simultaneously with the line’s 14th ship, Costa Pacifica, will be the most innovative vessel yet for the company.

“We have originated so many things, from the spa staterooms you see now throughout the industry to the double retractable magrodome, but Luminosa will be a kind of culmination of everything we have been plus totally new ideas,” he added. “And this is the first time the industry has seen a cruise line christen two ships simultaneously.”

Onorato said the new entertainment will include 4-D movies.

“In one scene a snake will come out from the screen and spit at you,” he said. “Clean water, of course. But it is a remarkable technology, and so is the light show we are going to offer in the showroom.”

The theme of light will permeate the 2,260-passenger ship, which is a completely new design for Costa, with 772 of the 1,130 staterooms having balconies. Iridescent interiors will be decorated using materials like mother-of-pearl and the company has said that public rooms, named for heavenly phenomena — the Supernova Atrium, the Altair Disco, Rigel Cigar Lounge, Sirius Cafeteria and Taurus Restaurant — will hold surprises.

Costa’s two-deck Samsara Spa will be tweaked and sports facilities will have new features including a roller-skating rink.

Artwork onboard will be extraordinary, even by Costa standards, with specially commissioned sculptures and previously unpublished photography from prominent Italian artists.
