The Details

Verdura Golf & Spa Resort

During the summer of 2009, Rocco Forte Collection opened its first resort property in Sicily, Italy. The Verdura Golf & Spa Resort is located on the island’s southern coast and was built at a cost of $175 million.

The property features 203 oceanview rooms and suites that overlook 1.2 miles of private Mediterranean coastline. The resort, designed by Italian architect Flavio Albanese, combines contemporary design with traditional materials on the island, such as volcanic tufa, cane and wood to create a luxurious resort that complements its island surroundings.

Olga Polizzi, the director of design for the Rocco Forte Collection, handled the interiors and also turned to the island of Sicily for inspiration, using a variety of textures and warm, earthy tones to reflect the rugged beauty of Sicily. Polizzi also used local ceramics furniture and artifacts to create interiors that are both authentic and luxurious.

Each guestroom features a private terrace, individually controlled air-conditioning, a desk, two telephone lines and Internet connection, yoga mats, beach bag and towels. Also available is a private dining menu, a well-stocked in-room bar, satellite television, a security safe, a portable professional hairdryer and plenty of storage space.

As one of the only luxury golf resorts in Sicily, the Verdura Golf & Spa Resort features two, 18-hole championship golf courses as well as a nine-hole course, all of which have been designed by golf architect, Kyle Phillips. The resort also features practice facilities including a driving range, putting and chipping areas and bunkers. Private lessons, clinics and academies for younger players are also available to clients.

Also at the resort is the Verdura Spa, which is a 43,000 square foot facility set apart from the rest of the property. The holistic spa, which features advanced treatments using Mediterranean seawater and extracts from locally grown lemons and oranges, is made up of a series of pavilions surrounding an open courtyard. Eleven treatment rooms offer terraces where clients can enjoy outdoor treatments, as well. It is equipped with a fitness and yoga center, a double-height hammam, a beauty salon, a bar and a lap pool, as well as four hydrotherapy pools in the gardens.
