Set Sail on a Private Yacht in Greece

Apr 16, 2011

The Greek Islands are an obvious choice for travelers who would like to enjoy the sun, sea and scenery of the Mediterranean, and Gap Adventures brings these qualities to life with its summer sailing opportunities. The adventure travel company is offering 20 percent discounts on all Greek Island Sailing adventures that depart in May and June 2011, offering a private yacht experience that is both unique and affordable.

“There is no more relaxing way to experience these beautiful islands than onboard one of our private, 50-foot yachts with a veteran skipper who can take you to remote places inaccessible to other travelers,” said Sue Barreau, the Europe and Middle East senior operations manager. “If you’re looking for a chance to kick back and relax away from the tourist throngs, then our sailing trips are for you.”

Gap Adventures offers a number of discounted sailing excursions within the area that range from eight to 22 days at sea. The Greek Islands Sailing Adventure (Mykonos to Santorini) highlights the Aegean Sea, Cyclades Islands, Mykonos and Santorini on an eight-day sailing trip on one of five yachts. There are multiple trips offered throughout May and June to allow clients the chance to explore ancient archaeological sites, try fresh seafood and more. Rates start at $1,000  per person.

The roundtrip Santorini 10-day Greek Islands Sailing Adventure gives clients a chance to wander around whitewashed villages on Paros, explore on Mykonos and discover Venetian architecture on Naxos. As with all Gap Adventures trips, clients with a sense of adventure will appreciate the focus on culture, nature and active travel in the Greek Islands. Also available for a number of dates in May and June, this trip is priced at $1,424 per person.

Another option for clients wanting to take a longer break on the seas is the Greek Islands Sailing Adventure from Kos to Athens. This 22-day trip is one of Gap Adventure’s top sellers and features the Dodecanese Islands, Southern Cyclades, Mykonos, Athens and more, along with a number of potential additional stops. There are plenty of activities both on and off of the boat including hiking, snorkeling and shopping. Prices, per person, for this trip are $2,840.

All of Gap Adventures trips give clients a special experience that is off the beaten path and away from the crowds of tourists. At an affordable price, the relaxing sailing experiences are alluring to clients both new to sailing and to boating enthusiasts.

“Chartering a private yacht is out of reach for most people, but sailing with a captain who knows these waters as well as the history and culture of the area means our travelers enjoy a hassle-free time with a chief experience officer and qualified captain all in one,” said Barreau.

Singles, couples and families can choose from eight berths onboard the yachts, but it is not uncommon for a small group to book the entire vessel.

“It’s an outstanding trip to take with a group of friends,” said Barreau.

During the day, most groups take time to explore the area with hiking, swimming and snorkeling trips on each island. Clients can also check out local shops, leisurely dine on fresh food and sample Ouzo, Greece’s famous liquor. At night, passengers have the option of sleeping under the stars on the deck, weather permitting.

Not only can clients take advantage of the opportunity to rest and relax, but they may also choose to learn to sail from the captain when conditions allow. Travelers have the chance to steer the boat, pull the anchor and learn about navigation.
