Touring Oahu on two wheels presents a carefree way for fitness buffs, families and adventure-seekers to travel at their own pace. Whether pedaling a bike or riding a motorized vehicle, two-wheel sprees let clients bypass the usual tourist routes, perhaps even going off-road and blazing trails in the tropics.

As in any destination, two-wheeling it on Oahu comes with its own set of safety rules. Wear a helmet, and if you’re not on a guided tour, keep the map or GPS handy. If applicable, lock your wheels when you’re not on them.

The following activities are ideal for anyone who believes two wheels are better than four.

Bicycling On-Road and Off
Bike Hawaii lists a variety of guided bike itineraries. Its 5-mile downhill ride meanders through the Puu Ohia rainforest, while its Kaaawa Valley mountain biking trek leads to backcountry thrills.

Another reliable outfitter is Pedal Bike Tours, whose guided trips range from Waikiki and Honolulu routes to a day on the North Shore. Pedal Bike Tours is one of several firms that rent bikes to clients looking to strike out on their own.

Moped or Scooter Adventures
For two-wheel transportation that’s faster than a bike and cheaper than a motorcycle, try a moped or scooter. Both are fuel-efficient and easy to drive and park.

Rental lengths range anywhere from a half-day to a week at Scooter Rentals Oahu and up to a month at Hawaiian Style Rentals. Popular self-guided routes include Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay and Mtount Tantalus. Scooter rentals require a motorcycle license, while mopeds don’t.

Motorcycles on the Move
Harleys, Kawasakis, Triumphs, BMWs and Chieftains stand ready to roll at several Waikiki-based motorcycle rental companies. Big Kahuna Rentals, Chase Hawaii Rentals, Cruzin' Hawaii and Waikiki Harley Rentals guarantee well-maintained bikes.

Their employees share suggestions for destinations best reached while straddling a sleek, fast-moving chopper. Renters must have a motorcycle license.

Segway Tours
It’s a breeze riding around Oahu during guided Segway tours. Pre-tour lessons teach the basics of operating the self-balancing personal transporter.

Starting at Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort, groups roll merrily along to Diamond Head, Waikiki, Honolulu and Magic Island, with a sunset beach ride as well. On the North Shore, Turtle Bay Resort offers off-road Segway trips, a zippy way to explore Oahu on two wheels.
