Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort

I could tell that Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort was special as our taxi wound from San Jose past the marina, sculpture park and golf greens to a hilltop overlooking the Sea of Cortez. The rugged Sierras served as a backdrop for tiled roofs atop white hacienda-style buildings, all facing an endless blue horizon. When the concierge opened the door to our suite, I knew I wouldn’t leave the property until I was forced to catch the flight home.

Our suite’s indulgences included a bottle of bubbly; a sea-facing balcony with a whirlpool built for two; a second whirlpool tub and separate shower in the bathroom; and the best bed we had encountered during two weeks of sampling multiple hotels. After checking out the beer and juice supply in the minibar and ordering soft feather pillows, a dozen bottles of water and ample coffee, my husband and I settled in for much-needed respite.

Our solitude didn’t last long, however. We could see a beach, two pools and several promising restaurants from our sun-drenched balcony. Hunger drove us into the sun and straight to the Seaside Grill, which immediately won us over with its sublime avocado and tuna tower and fresh sashimi. Over the following 48 hours, we sampled fabulous food at gourmet Japanese and Mexican restaurants and lingered over papaya, yogurt, omelets and cinnamon rolls at the breakfast buffet. Though we weren’t able to check out the other three specialty restaurants or multiple bars and snack areas during our stay, we met plenty of guests who had happily grazed through them all.

We encountered several couples who were staying at Secrets for a full week, repeating previous vacations. Claudia Smith and her husband were guests at the resort when Hurricane Odile raged through Los Cabos in September 2014. The resort staff handled a dreadful situation beautifully, Smith said, doing everything possible to keep guests safe and comfortable.

“The main reason we came back to Secrets was because of the staff,” Smith said. “They took such good care of us during the hurricane that we wanted to show them our support.”

We, too, felt pampered as pool attendants arranged towels and moved umbrellas to block the sun.

Waiters delivered delicious mojitos (no cheap alcohol here), lemonade and chilled water with amazing speed. Chefs seemed to appear out of nowhere with snacks, and spa therapists offered excellent impromptu poolside massages.

Secrets looked huge at first glance, but the 500 suites are actually arranged sensibly around the main dining and entertainment complex. Most have ocean views, while some garden view suites on the bottom floors have terraces opening to private pools. The company’s trademark Unlimited Luxury style includes high-quality 24-hour room service selections, premium drinks and multiple activities, including movies under the stars and live music performances.

“It’s a wonderful resort,” Smith said. “Secrets Puerto Los Cabos has everything you need. It’s perfect for those who simply want to relax.”
