Maui’s spas draw on the natural appeal of their location. From their locally grown ingredients and ancient Hawaiian treatments to calming views of the great outdoors, they offer the perfect recipe for relaxation.

A scan of recent resort spa news underscores the major impact of the natural and cultural environment on the island’s wellness facilities and practices. The following indulgences are currently making headlines, inviting clients to unwind Maui-style.

Andaz Maui at Wailea
This new southwest Maui hotel has opened the doors of Awili Spa and Salon, a 14,000-square-foot oasis with 10 treatment rooms, a full-service salon, three relaxation rooms, a 24-hour fitness center and a private adult spa pool. Guests can personalize their experience by choosing at least two spa treatments and working with the spa apothecary to create their own custom-blended products. www.maui.andaz.hyatt.com

Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui
Fairmont Kea Lani will unveil its new, multimillion-dollar Willow Stream Spa in December 2013. The 9,000-square-foot facility will feature three outdoor spa cabanas and 13 indoor treatment rooms, including a suite with a wave table that simulates floating in the water, an area for Vichy shower treatments and an enclave of four treatment rooms. It also promises a mud bar, showers inspired by Maui rain and a hot lava stone foot bed. www.fairmont.com/kealani

Four Seasons Resort Maui
Four Seasons Resort Maui is promoting its Wai-Vari spa treatment in time for the annual winter return of humpback whales to Maui’s waters. Floating weightlessly in the ocean in front of the hotel, guests relax with the nurturing hands of therapists who perform gentle stretching treatments.

“The feeling is primordial, being embraced by the ocean and hearing the song of the whales,” said Four Seasons Maui spa director Pat Makozak. www.fourseasons.com/maui

Grand Wailea
Every year, Grand Wailea’s Spa Grande creates a new farm-to-spa massage treatment. During 2013 it added the Alii Honey Steam Cocoon, harnessing the nutrients of the fresh, raw honey cultivated on the resort’s rooftop. A full-body mango exfoliation is followed by an application of raw honey over the entire body. Eucalyptus steam maximizes the treatment’s effect. The Hawaiian Herbal Steam Cocoon is also new this year and uses antioxidants from local plants. www.grandwailea.com

Honua Kai Resort and Spa
Sept. 20, 2013, marked the opening of Honua Kai’s 3,000-square-foot Hoola Spa, with three treatment rooms and, beginning in 2014, an open-air cabana village. The spa’s exclusive beauty partner, Malie Organics, celebrates its Hawaiian roots by using only native, organic ingredients. Exclusive spa treatment options include the revitalizing mango nectar package and anti-aging coffee fruit renewal facial. Hoola is also home to the island’s first Himalayan salt room, featuring hand-mined salt known for its healing benefits. www.hoolaspamaui.com

The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua
Guests who visit Kapalua Spa during fall 2013 can experience its farm-to-table treatments using herbs harvested from the resort’s onsite organic garden. Options include a lavender manicure and pedicure; aromatherapy massage in the Hawaiian lomilomi tradition, enhanced by a ginger and rosemary foot treatment; and the combination of an organic facial, an exfoliating peel with detoxifying herbal extracts and a massage with lemongrass-infused oil. www.kapalua.com/spa

Sheraton Maui
The hotel’s Spa at Black Rock offers treatments using Queen Bee products, a skin care line that uses Maui-crafted honey blended with locally grown herbs, flowers and fruits. The Meli Meli Queen Bee facial is one of the line’s most nutrient-rich treatments. It begins with a honey cleanser and organic hydrosol mister, followed by a papaya enzyme exfoliating scrub and culminating in an ultra-hydrating chocolate honey mask. www.sheraton-maui.com/spa

Westin Maui Resort & Spa/Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas
Among the new spa amenities from Westin’s two Maui properties is a new facial that draws on the renewing qualities of semi-precious rubies and sapphires. Meanwhile, in honor of Spa Helani’s fifth anniversary, Westin now features an exclusive experience with five therapeutic rituals inspired by the islands and traditions of Tahaa, Manihi, Bora Bora, Raiatea and Hawaii. www.westinmaui.com, www.westinkaanapali.com
