The luxury hotelier announced a new management agreement with Zhongda Zhongfanxin Proprietary Company last month to run what will be called The Ritz-Carlton, Xian.

In the October announcement, officials said that when built, the new luxury property will feature 288 guestrooms and suites along with extensive meeting and event space. The hotel will also be home to two restaurants, featuring Japanese and Cantonese cuisine, and a high-end bar.

Once the eastern end of the ancient Silk Road, Xian is the capital of China’s Shaanxi province. Today, Xian is also the gateway for travelers eager to see the country’s legendary, life-size Terra-Cotta Warriors buried with China’s first Qin emperor.

The sprawling archaeological wonder was protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

“To explore Xian is to unearth the history of China, making it one of the world’s great cities on a global itinerary for our guests,” said Herve Humler, president and chief operating officer for The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, in a statement. “We’re delighted to be partnering with Zhongda Zhongfanxin Proprietary Company to open the first Ritz-Carlton in such an important and culturally significant destination.”

Visitors to Xian today can explore a wide-ranging collection of temples, cultural relics and Ming-era city walls by bicycle. Xian is also home to a thriving Muslim Quarter that hosts a bustling nightly market popular with travelers.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company manages 87 hotels in Europe, Asia, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean.
