Finding Adventure in the Yucatan

Hotels offer a number of new packages for adventure seekers

The 81-mile stretch of the Riviera Maya on the coastline of the Yucatan Peninsula is tailor-made for adventure travelers.

Known for uncrowded beaches, the area also has a network of underground rivers, more than 100 cenotes (water-filled sinkholes), archeological sites and a vast variety of eco-adventure sports available, such as kayaking, diving, snorkeling, mountain biking, bird watching and deep-sea fishing.

Hotels in the region are offering a number of new packages for adventure-minded travelers:

Ikal del Mar is offering two. The Underwater World package includes six days in a luxury villa with private pool, two open-water dives and one cenote dive.

Included are roundtrip transfers to and from Cancun International Airport and daily breakfast. Prices start at $3,445 through April 30, and $3,115 for bookings from May 1 through Dec. 20.

The Ikal’s Ultimate Adrenaline Rush package offers eight days in a luxury villa with private pool, two open-water dives, one cenote dive, swimming with dolphins and a sky dive experience. Roundtrip transfers and breakfast are included. The price is $4,859 through April 30, and $4,409 from May 1-Dec. 20.

The new-and-improved Maroma Resort and Spa is offering the Yucatan Exploration package, which includes four-nights accommodation, a romantic three-course dinner for two with wine, daily breakfast, one Temazcal session (a Mexican-style sweat bath) per person, snorkeling, private tours of Tulum and Coba and visits to sacred cenotes. Airport transfers are included. Prices start at $1,715 for double occupancy.

At the Shangri-La Caribe Beach Village Resort, adventure travelers also have plenty of time to relax in a hammock. The “Adventure Dive” package includes seven nights stay, three days of reef diving and guided cenote dive with Cyan-Ha. The price, based on double occupancy, is $762 per person.

The Riviera del Sol Hotel is offering a “Mayan Adventure” package which includes a full-day tour of Coba and Pac-Chen with rappelling, zipline jungle crossing, canoeing and a Mayan luncheon; or a full-day tour in the Nohoch jungle with a 4x4 crossing, snorkeling in underwater caves, kayaking to a reef and snorkeling; or a full-day tour of Coba and Chimuch with rappelling, zipline jungle crossing, kayak tour and Mayan luncheon. Seven-nights accommodation, breakfast and use of Playa Mamitas Beach Club are also included. The prices, based on double occupancy, start at $543 per person.
