Todos Santos, a Colonial town on the Baja California Sur, is said to be a haven for artists because of the special quality and angle of the light. Now the eclectic upscale inn of Posada la Poza aims to entice would-be artists to the city with a four-day “Creative Recreation” escape.

The package combines professional instruction in either painting (acrylic or oil) or digital photography with a variety of culinary experiences, from cooking lessons to gourmet meals and wine tastings.

“We wanted to put together a unique getaway for sophisticated urbanites that would bring them to off-the-beaten-path Todos Santos for a long weekend of learning and creativity combined with epicurean delights and recreation,” said Juerg Wiesendanger, a Swiss native who owns the inn along with his Czech wife Libusche.

Juerg, who is also the chef at the inn’s restaurant El Gusto!, will teach the cooking classes, which will focus on both Mexican and European cuisine.

Libusche, an artist whose work is shown in European galleries as well as her own in Todos Santos, will teach the painting classes. Her work also adorns the inn, both inside and out.

The photography classes will be taught by local expatriates, who will include instruction in taking pictures of the architecture of historic Todos Santos, to nature scenes of the desert and beach, which is on the Pacific Coast. The inn is located on a spring-fed lagoon in a bird sanctuary.

Though secluded the inn is only accessible by dirt roads Posada la Poza is about 60 to 90 minutes from the airports of La Paz and Los Cabos, and about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas. It has seven suites, a saltwater swimming pool, exercise equipment and yoga classes, the use of bikes and fishing equipment, and massage services.

Four dates have been set for the Thursday-to-Sunday packages: Painting packages will be available Oct. 28-31, 2004; and March 24-27, 2005. Digital photography packages are scheduled for Nov. 25-28, 2004; and April 28-May 1, 2005. Guests must bring their own digital cameras or painting equipment, an easel will be provided.

Packages include airport transfers, accommodations, all meals, classes, cocktails and wine tastings. Rates start at $1,480 for two, or $950 for one in a regular suite; $1,650 for two or $1,120 for one in a junior suite; and $1,970 for two and $1,440 for one in the honeymoon suite.
