Hacienda Xcanatun Joins Virtuoso

Boutique property true to its roots

Once an 18th century sisal plantation that has been reimaged as a small luxury hotel, the restored Hacienda Xcanatun has been selected to join the Virtuoso travel network.

Set amid acres of gardens on the outskirts of Merida, Xcanatun combines the unique hacienda ambiance of colonial Mexico with the contemporary luxury and amenities of an intimate boutique property.

Opened in 2000, Xcanatun is currently the only privately-owned and managed hacienda hotel in the Yucatan. Setting Xcanatun apart from similar properties are its full service spa offering holistic Mayan and beauty treatments, plus a gourmet restaurant open throughout the day and evening. Additional facilities include two freshwater swimming pools, one of which was created from the hacienda’s original water reservoir.

Guests have a choice of 13 individually-decorated suites and five superior rooms gleaming with polished stone and marble floors, 18-ft. beamed ceilings, soaring skylights, huge marble-wrapped bathrooms, terrace/patio and air-conditioning.

Since purchasing the property in 1993, owners Jorge Ruz and Cristina Baker committed themselves to preserving the integrity of the estate’s colonial architecture while respecting Mayan precepts. They have successfully reconstructed the original form, space and decoration of the hacienda buildings.
