The airline AeroMexico has announced plans to launch a new “Magic of Mexico” travel agent training program.

Conducted in partnership with Oregon-based Destination Ventures Ltd., the 12 education seminars will enable agents to become “Mexico Specialists” in the primary gateway markets served by the airline.

“Travel agents play a uniquely important role in Mexico’s tourism success,” said Luis Del Rio, vice president of AeroMexico’s international division. “Therefore it is essential, particularly due to Mexico’s ever-changing tourism landscape, for agents to remain up-to-date on what the country has to offer so that they may best serve our mutual customers.

“Because of the number of destinations we serve from our 17 U.S. gateways, we are in a unique position to bring our own expertise and that of the industry’s most knowledgeable experts to travel agents,” added Del Rio.

AeroMexico serves more than 40 cities in Mexico, and flies out of Dallas/Fort Worth, El Paso, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Ontario, Calif., Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego and Tucson.

The airline first began offering agent training in 1992, and an estimated 20,000 agents have participated over the years.

The 2004 seminars, which are scheduled through November, will showcase the beach destinations of Loreto, La Paz, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Nuevo Vallarta, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Acapulco, Huatulco, Cancun and the Riviera Maya; the states of Chihuahua, Sinloa, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Oaxaca and Yucatan; and Copper Canyon and Merida.

For a $19 registration fee, agents will receive the 2004 “Magic of Mexico” sales guide, three hours of classroom instruction, a trade show with face-to-face meetings with more than 20 suppliers and convention and visitors bureaus, a sit-down dinner and prizes. Continuing education credits from The Travel Institute are also available, and participants may be eligible for an AeroMexico fam trip in 2005.

For agents in the Western U.S., seminars are scheduled for Sept. 9 in Phoenix at the Phoenix Art Museum. But the exact locations for the following seminars have not yet been announced: Oct. 13 in Houston and Oct. 14 in Dallas; and Nov. 17 in Costa Mesa, Calif.
