Los Cabos has been lucky the last couple of years. Positioned at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos’ distance from the violence in Mexico’s border towns has made it possible to promote the seaside city as a safe destination on the country’s Pacific Coast. In fact, the numbers show that interest in Los Cabos is on the rise.

“We are very proud to announce that Los Cabos’ visitor numbers have increased compared to 2013,” said Eduardo Segura, managing director for the Los Cabos Tourism Board. “We had a 15.3 percent increase of international guests during the first quarter of 2014, compared to the same time last year.”

Hot Hotels
Los Cabos’ uptick in occupancy was strongest in the region’s five-star hotels and grand luxury resorts, and this bodes well for the future, since many upscale properties are slated to open this year and in 2015.

“There are more than 1,300 hotel rooms under development, as well as two new golf courses,” said Segura. “All of the new projects target high-end travelers.”

The 174-room Thompson Los Cabos is among the group of properties poised to open this year, and it will be the first Thompson hotel to open in a resort destination. Offering views of El Arco, Cabo’s signature landmark, the hotel will make the most of its beachfront location. The property will have 115 rooms in the main building and 59 rooms in two condo-style buildings. The condo-style buildings include one- and two-bedroom units as well as three- and four-bedroom penthouses.

Another soon-to-debut property is The Resort at Diamante. Billing itself as a kid-friendly golf resort, Diamante will be spread over an impressive 80 acres and will offer a waterpark, a spa, a 10-acre swimmable saltwater lagoon and the highly anticipated El Cardonal Golf Course designed by Tiger Woods.

The third resort scheduled to open in 2014 is The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Los Cabos. It will have 124 oceanfront villas with one, two and three bedrooms, as well as private infinity pools, outdoor terraces and butler service.

In 2015, Los Cabos will see the opening of a JW Marriott in the Puerto Los Cabos development. The property will cover 14 acres and have 300 guestrooms overlooking the Sea of Cortez.

“This hotel site is absolutely beautiful, with an extensive beach and access to the many Puerto Los Cabos facilities,” said Roberto Diaz, director of development and construction, Grupo Diestra.

The Park Hyatt Los Cabos will also make its debut in 2015, offering 196 guestrooms, 36 Park-Hyatt branded residences, and a 1,300-square-foot spa. There will also be extensive meeting and event facilities and several restaurants.

An Easy Trip
California clients will find it easier to reach Los Cabos when Southwest Airlines begins its daily nonstop flights between Santa Ana/Orange County and Los Cabos on Aug. 10.

“California is Los Cabos’ number-one market,” said Segura. “And flights from most parts of the state are not more than two hours.”

Segura recommends that agents get up to speed with Los Cabos’ growth by taking advantage of fam trips in the area.

“Agents may contact us directly and let us know their interests. That way, we can consider them for future opportunities according to their markets and specialized products,” advised Segura. “We also encourage agents to register on our website so that they can be informed of other activities in the destination.”

Being at the end of a peninsula, it’s only natural to wonder if Los Cabos’ growth will slow down in the near future, but Segura doesn’t think so.

“Los Cabos has not reached its saturation point,” he said. “It is still growing and will continue to expand in the coming years.”
