As I write this, I’m at Mexico’s Tianguis Turistico trade show, held this year in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit, Mexico. In addition to being a great celebration of travel, it’s inspiring to see the investment in tourism by both the Mexican government and the private sector that is on display here. Clearly, tourism is vital to Mexico, and there is a lot of optimism about overcoming negative perceptions that consumers may have.

Tourism is a powerful economic force all over the world, in fact. Last year, travel tourism spending in the U.S. rose more than 8 percent, and that was at a time when most other industries struggled to remain stable. Travel agents, of course, are a big part of this success and, once again, it’s that time of year when TravelAge West asks agents to acknowledge the suppliers who have continued to provide a quality product and who have supported them throughout these tough times. The companies that have kept up their product offerings as well as made an investment in travel agents deserve to be recognized.

You can vote by visiting our TravelAge West Western Agents Votes of Excellence (WAVE) Awards website, TravelAgeWest.com/WAVE. And, you can view this year’s Editor’s Picks as well as the WAVE Awards ballot on page 12 of this issue.

With your WAVE vote, you can say thank you to those companies that have not reacted to bad economic times by pulling back on quality or abandoning travel agents. This vote is an important gesture and, without a doubt, it’s one that the suppliers appreciate.
