Travelers are looking for ways to save this holiday season.
A new survey of 900 American Express Travel agents found that, this holiday season, travelers are looking for smart ways to save. With vacation budgets stretched thin, clients are cutting costs by using reward points, frequent-flier miles, taking shorter trips, visiting alternative destinations, staying closer to home and choosing less-expensive hotels.
The survey found that 77 percent of agents said vacationers are looking for more value or bargains, and 86 percent said that customers are looking for "smart luxury," which agents defined as unique travel experiences and special treatment for less.
Nearly 87 percent of agents surveyed indicated that clients are using rewards points to offset expenses, and almost half indicated their clients were booking more value-priced hotels. Forty percent are staying closer to home, and 53 percent said that cruises offered the best deals.
