Apple Vacations president and CEO John Mullen, along with vice president and general manager Mark Noennig, announced the recipients of the 2006 Crystal Apple Awards and Golden Apple Awards at Apple Vacations’ Chicago trade show, held Sept. 12.

The awards recognize hoteliers who have earned exceptional ratings based on questionnaires completed by Apple Vacationers. Areas rated include location, overall staff and service, food quality, amenities, public areas, beach and entertainment. Eighty hotels and resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean, as well as 25 hotels and resorts in Hawaii, were honored with an award. Over 1,200 travel agents attended the trade show, along with more than 150 airline, tourist board and hotel representatives from Mexico, the Caribbean and Hawaii.

CLAYTON APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF KOR
Brad Korzen, CEO and founder of the Los Angeles-based real estate development and management firm, The Kor Group, has announced the appointment of Nicholas Clayton as the new president of Kor Hotel Group, the company’s hospitality division.

As president, Clayton will ensure that Kor’s 19 properties, including its existing boutique hotels and in-development residential hotel projects, remain dedicated to the highest standards of excellence. He will also facilitate company growth, through the acquisition of new properties and by maximizing value in current operations.

Clayton is a 20-year veteran of the hospitality industry and comes to the Kor Hotel Group with operations experience through senior management positions with leading international hotel groups. Most recently he was senior vice president of operations for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, where he was responsible for Asian and European properties. He was also involved in building and differentiating the Mandarin Oriental brand.



REE JOINS CRUISESHIPCENTERS
Travel industry veteran Geraldine Ree was named senior vice president, sales and marketing of CruiseShipCenters International Inc. She will oversee the company’s marketing and business development strategies in this newly created position.

She joins CruiseShipCenters after 17 years with Princess Cruises, where she most recently held the position of regional sales director for Canada, Mid, Central and Pacific Northwest U.S.A. She has experience in consumer marketing, retail sales and supplier operations.

“[Ree] adds a whole new dimension to our executive team,” said Michael Drever, president and CEO of CruiseShipCenters. “She understands the travel business from every facet, is a dynamic communicator and a proven team leader.”



CLIFFORD 'SHOOTS FOR HAWAII'
Evelyn Clifford was the winner of Formella Travel’s “Shoot for Hawaii” contest. Presenting her the United Vacations trip for two at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki, were Dave Formella, president of Formella Travel in Long Beach, Calif.; and Kathy Schugg, Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort & Spa.



REPS FLOCK TO TRAVEL MART
From private jets to private islands, representatives from the travel industry came to Las Vegas to meet with Virtuoso travel consultants. The meeting gave Virtuoso’s constituents their member consultants and preferred suppliers an opportunity to foster relationships through some 260,000 individual meetings. Under the name “Evolve, Reinvent, Execute,” the organization demonstrated the changes taking place within the company and unveiled its latest and largest initiative, “Strategy for Growth.”

Virtuoso also used the opportunity to announce significant relationships, such as a recently signed deal with Virgin Galactic, the company spearheading the space tourism industry. A select group of Virtuoso agents will have the opportunity to become “Accredited Space Agents.”

Virtuoso also announced details regarding the network’s next key meeting, the 2007 Overseas Symposium.

NEW GM AT CONTESSA
Benchmark Hospitality International appointed Eric Adame general manager for Hotel Contessa, a luxury property on the Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas. Adame has more than two decades of management experience in the hospitality industry and was previously the general manager of the Hotel ICON, in downtown Houston. He joined Benchmark Hospitality in 2002 as the director of rooms for the Scottsdale Resort & Conference Center in Scottsdale, Ariz.

“I am pleased to welcome Eric to his new role with Benchmark as general manager of Hotel Contessa,” said Tom O’Shea, vice president of Benchmark Hospitality. “We look forward to his great success here in San Antonio.”
