Renaissance Runaround?

A mysterious but celebratory e-mail sent out earlier this month caused an angry frenzy among travel agents.

“Renaissance Cruises is Back from Vacation!” the missive exclaimed. Clicking on a link or dialing a toll-free number in the e-mail gets you to Online Vacation Center, an American Express agency based in Plantation, Fla., that sells space on many cruise lines but not Renaissance.

(The line filed for bankruptcy and shut down Sept. 25.)

That’s because, while the name lives on, Renaissance as a company is a shell with no ships. They’re all in other hands, including P&O Princess.

Ed Rudner, the former head of Renaissance and the mastermind of its antitravel agent practices, is president of Online Vacation Center and the reported owner of the Renaissance Cruises name.
