There’s a quote from T.S. Eliot that comes to mind around the New Year: “To make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.”

While the idea of a fresh start is seductive, the truth is that we are always coming from the past and, whether we like it or not, we are affected by the baggage that we bring with us. So, while New Year is a time of renewal, it is also a time of reflection.

When it comes to the travel industry, the past and future intersected in various ways this year. On the one hand, we have the opportunity to look back in relief and know with confidence that 2013 was the year when we put the worst of our economic woes behind us — yet political unrest and a changing environment are just two of the factors that may affect the travel industry in the year ahead.

At TravelAge West, we strive to keep one eye on what our readers need to know today, while being aware of the factors that will affect our industry in the future. We hope that we have been able to provide you with information that has helped make you successful in 2013, and we look forward to continuing our mission in the year ahead. Here’s to a happy New Year!
