The Long Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau (LBCVB) welcomed meeting planners and guests to celebrate Red Bull Flugtag, on Aug. 21. The waterfront event brought more than 105,000 people to Long Beach, Calif.

Flugtag means “flying day” in German and the Red Bull Flugtag is a competition in which people are invited to design, build and pilot homemade flying machines and then fly them off of a 30-foot ramp. While distance is important, judges also consider creativity and showmanship.

The Long Beach competition included a panel of judges including actor Cheech Marin; Dave “The King of Mexico” Sanchez from KROQ’s The Kevin and Bean Show; actress Nicole Sullivan; professional skateboarder Ryan Sheckler; and “The Bachelor Pad” reality star Tenley Molzahn.

The LBCVB’s Flight of the Spruce Goose 2.0 flying machine paid tribute to Long Beach aviation history and was one of 35 teams chosen to participate in the event. It flew 36 feet off the ramp into Long Beach Harbor.
