The Details

Tony Gonchar, CEO of ASTA, will leave the organization to be the vice president of the Representative Network for the American Express U.S. Consumer Travel Network on Aug. 6.

Gonchar headed ASTA for 19 months and the move comes as a surprise to many in the industry.

“It was definitely a surprise, but we know that, in his new position, Tony will be a strong supporter of ASTA,” said ASTA president, Nina Meyer. “We wish Tony every success. He has been such an asset to us and has really turned the organization around. He has set the rudder in the right direction.”

Meyer will temporarily take over Gonchar’s role as CEO. A search committee will be set up early next week to find the next leader of the organization.

“We hope to find someone as exiting and innovative as Tony,” said Meyer.

In Gonchar’s new role, he will develop ways to grow the American Express Representative Travel Network while working closely with the strategic partnerships team to deliver compelling products and services to network members that bring value to American Express cardmembers.

Prior to joining ASTA, Gonchar was executive vice president of sales and marketing at Virtuoso and, before that, he ran Expedia's private label and branded partnerships division.
