Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ new ship, the 128-guest Douro Spirit, was christened in Porto, Portugal on April 30.

“Uniworld is proud to have the new Douro Spirit to take our guests through this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage region. The Douro Valley has been recognized by National Geographic Traveler as one of the World’s Great Places in their annual Destination Survey,” said Uniworld president Guy Young.

The Douro Valley is being increasingly recognized for its wine making and natural beauty. Its wine heritage — Port — dates back more than 2,000 years in this, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. The region is also quaint and visually unusual, with dramatic scenery, rambling vineyards and charming quintas (country villas) clinging to the steep slopes of the valley. One of the most unspoiled regions of Europe, the valley is a cultural mecca in an exceptionally beautiful setting, but one that requires specially built ships to operate.

“Uniworld is delighted with the growth and success we have achieved on the Douro River — surely one of the most beautiful regions in the world,” added Young.

Every stateroom and suite onboard the Douro Spirit is riverview with a French balcony, a very important aspect in this area of romantic scenery where guests are most interested in the natural landscapes that have been instrumental in driving its tourist appeal.

Accommodations have flat-screen televisions, hair dryers individual climate control, safes and L’Occitane bath and body amenities in the bathrooms. The Douro Spirit’s common areas include a main lounge featuring a full-service bar and a dance floor, a restaurant, a sun deck with Jacuzzi and a small swimming pool, an onboard restaurant with open seating, a fitness room, a massage room, a beauty salon and a boutique.

Uniworld’s 11-day Portugal, Spain & the Douro River Valley cruise includes three nights in Lisbon at a deluxe hotel with breakfast; a seven-night cruise in a stateroom with a French balcony; complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks served with dinner onboard; complimentary bottled water in the staterooms; complimentary coffee and tea throughout the day, 10 fully hosted shore excursions by English-speaking local guides; and transfers on arrival and departure days.
