Rhode Island-based tour operator, Collette Vacations, is offering a new European tour program for 2011 — Spain’s Costa del Sol and Portugal’s Riviera, with initial departures beginning in May.

The 13-day tour, priced at $1,899 per person, land-only, features visits to six UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Europe’s largest gothic cathedral and what is believed to be the final resting place of Christopher Columbus — the Cathedral of Seville — and Granada’s Alhambra Palace. Other highlights of the tour include the Prado Museum in Madrid; a high-speed train journey from Madrid to Cordoba; a visit to Fatima, Portugal’s world famous Marian pilgrimage site; and a stop in Azeitao, a small agricultural village. In Azeitao, clients will learn how the Portuguese make their famous azulejos (hand-painted tiles) and visit a family-run shop to purchase souvenirs.

Apart from stops at museums and cultural sites, the tour will also provide regional wine at dinner and Whisper headsets, which will allow local guides and Collette tour managers to inform travelers about what they are seeing, even in noisy areas. Both will be offered throughout the tour in order to enhance the individual traveler’s experience.

Guests on this tour will also enjoy time for rest and relaxation, spending three nights in Costa del Sol and four nights in Portugal’s Riviera for what product manager Manny Paulo described as “fun in the sun.”

Paulo added that “Travel agents should position the tour as very leisurely paced, offering ample time for independent exploration and optional excursions.”

The new program, now available for sale, is a part of the company’s growing list of tours featuring Spain and Portugal.
