Continental Heads to Hilo

Big news for Hawaii's Big Island: Beginning June 9, Continental Airlines is launching the only direct flights from the U.S. mainland to Hilo, Hawaii, with daily nonstop service from Los Angeles International Airport and once-weekly service from San Francisco International Airport. For the new routes, Continental plans to use a 160-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 16 seats in first class and 144 seats in economy.

The addition of the two routes is welcome news for the Big Island. Based on initial Hawaii Tourism Authority projections, the flights could bring nearly 40,000 more visitors to the island and generate $50.6 million in direct visitor spending and $5.52 million in tax revenue.
